America's Next Top Music Producer Showcase

Monday, January 14, 2013

Tuesday, January 15, I attended the America's Next Top Music Producer showcase, hosted by Hot 97 DJ and my fellow St. John's alum Spynfo. I didn't know what to expect but hoped it would be something amazing.

By the time I arrived at S.O.B's it was 7:30 the stage was set with a full band including trumpet, sax, bass, and drums -- Sean Taylor, the starting act, introduced himself. He performed with his crew a few hip hop and r&b classics and soon got into his new song "Quiver". Right after he warmed up the crowd, Marcus Banks, a stand-up comedian and the nights referee introduced the judges: Hot 97's DJ Mister Cee, radio personality Peter Rosenberg, and rapper Fred The Godson. The audience was silent as the first two producers approached the stage, each introduced themselves and where they were from; they then asked Spynfo to play a pre-mixed track that sampled sitcom themes. The judges would then provide commentary and vote to push the producers to the next round. There were a few standout producers who took creativity to the next level, including a dope " A Different World" track that had me bopping so hard I thought I was Jay-Z in "Fade to Black".

Only two female producers graced the stage -- one was Produc-Her Beats; from the beginning she rocked the show with her sound, attitude, and on stage antics. She made it to the final round where she battled former pupil of Swizz Beatz, Mr. Hot City. Ms. Beats gave it all she had but Mr.Hot City won the crowd, the crown and grand prize of $500.

For me it was an experience and something I feel anyone with a love for music should attend. If you would like to enter the competition and get your music heard visit: Hotmusicproducer.com
