We all have heard the saying its not what you know, but who you know. That is why it's essential for anyone looking for a career to network.

Here is a list of sites that will help you potential social butterflies soar:

LinkedIn
If you don't have a LinkedIn account create one RIGHT NOW. LinkedIn is for professionals -- link with your contacts to connect with the whose who and whats what, browse jobs openings, and join groups within your industry.

Facebook
The social media giant has an events tab, which not only shows your events but your friends events(shhhh don't tell anybody). There you can see events you may want to visit. I suggest you give your friend a heads up first, before you attend.

MeetUp
There is a MeetUp for everything and if you don't see a group you're interested in create one. I once met a women who said she got her job, found her apartment, and some how met her bf all through a meetup.

EventBrite
I adore EventBrite, it makes searching for events soooooooo easy. Just put in a location, the amount you're willing to pay, keywords, and you can find an event for every night of the week.

Other tips
Another great place to check for events are organizations developed around your industry of choice. The music industry has several different organizations that have events all year around. For a list of music organizations try my resource page.

  1. Thanks for the heads up. I only knew about the basic Facebook and LinkedIn, so its good to know about other Social Media being used out there.

Right now I need to get as much exposure as possible. Are there any others you would suggest as well? Do you think there is a possibility of overkill?

  2. I think as long as you are active in the account it's nothing wrong having several accounts, but if you cant manage them effectively don't join too many. In terms of other social media sites it really depends on what you're using social media for but another one that maybe interesting for people trying to gain exposure is about.me it helps you build a public profile that you can use and give to contacts.
