How to Create Your Own Style

Aisha, fashionista and Creator of the Brownstonetiquette.com shares three tips on how to create your own standout style.

I think the three things an emerging artist or anyone for that matter should keep in mind when trying to develop their own outstanding personal style is: Think Iconic, Be Original and Always Comfortable.

What I mean when I say "icon" is think of something that will not only compliment you, but may always be associated with you! Think of Madonna and the "cone bra." Too extreme? OK, Rihanna and many of her hairstyles. Most noted, the pixie cut that thousands of girls were copying all over the country and the world. Even if its something like one long earring and one short to every event, party or outing that becomes synonymous with your name and presence.

No one... I mean NO ONE likes a copy cat. You know the saying "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" it's not, it's creepy. By chance, some people can't help but have similar styles, and adage to "great minds think alike!" But don't purposely try to recreate someone else tried and proven look. You will only set your self up for hard criticism. Beyonce had carved her r&b niche. The style was tried on both Rihanna and Solange. And both rarely were recognized in doing so. But when Riri took on the whole bad girl thing and Solo went boho, they were embraced by both of their audience respectfully, and now when Beyonce does anything similar she is accused of "trying to be like" them.

Listen, nothing you wear should EVER make you second guess yourself. If you step outside and think that the last three people you passed have judged you in your look, even if they haven't but in you head they did, then that look probably isn't for you. Trends are fun, trust me I know, but the beauty of being human is that we all have vast differences. Embrace yours and find what works for you. You don't do heels, google really rad flats; you don't do red lips, go to a beauty counter and test different shades on your hand. We've all experienced a couple of "cringe worthy moments" where we have a fashion fail, but just don't make it a habit.

If you follow these three principles, which are really just based on knowing who you are and what you want to project to the world, finding your outstanding personal style should be as easy as 1, 2, 3!
