Style Does Make A Difference

Great music is all about the sound but being a great artist is having talent + "the look". Now I'm not saying you must look like a model but you need to have your own unique style. A style that sets you apart from all the other pop/rock/soul singers. Something that fans want to emulate and years later a generation can define as a trend of the times. Like Madonna's cone bras and M.J's single glove. Here are few recent examples of artist that changed there style and catapulted to super stardom:

Miguel - "New Age Prince"

Remember when Miguel first came out and had that video with J.Cole "All I Want is You", there he sported a ceasar with the ill space age glasses.Yet when he came out with "Adorn" his hair was all slicked back like Prince and we loved it. Why did the new look work? Right timing -- the fashion industry dictates trend and the 60s are back in a big way. Designers such as Louis Vuitton are putting 60's inspired outfits all over the runway. A lot of other male artist like Justin Timberlake, and Bruno Mars are embracing their inner grown and sexy --and are dressing up in a suit and tie.

Solange - "Urban Hipster"

Solo has grown up a lot from the days of braids and singing duets with Lil Romeo. She has really created her own identity separate from older sister Beyonce (seems at time she jacking Solange's style). Now her urban hipster look has made her a recognized fashionista.

Lady Gaga - Pop Avante Garde

Prior to Gaga being a "lady" she was a just another party girl in hot pants and a bikini top. Now Gaga is known as one of the premier style icons of our time wearing bubble suits, cross dressing and showing off her gams in a meat dress.

I asked my stylist friend Aisha, creator of the blog Brownstone Etiquette, for three tips for creating your own personal standout style. Check out her amazing tips in the upcoming blog post tomorrow.
